Tribute To Buster

This page is dedicated to my dog Buster.  He was a happy, bouncing little red ball of joy.  The last year he lived he lost most of his bounce and playfulness, but he never lost his zest for life.  Although he was plagued with many illnesses, he would gallantly struggle to his feet each morning to greet the day and go on my paper route with me.  For five years he followed my bike.  He loved to go hunting rabbits.

When the time came after being accidentally shot by a friend of mine while hunting, I held him in my arms as he drew his last breath.  It was cold rainy night in November and we had just left Bloomington on a Saturday after failing to find one animal hospital open.  I was in the back seat of a friend's car holding him on my lap.  He wagged his tail for the last time, closed his eyes that had been fixed on me for 13 years, and his heart beat for the last time.  A better friend I have never had.  Goodbye Buster, I love you.  (Scroll down)

The Last Battle

If it should be that I grow frail and weak, and pain should keep me from my sleep,

Then will you do what must be done? for this...the last battle...can't be won.

You will be sad I understand, but don't let grief then stay your hand,

For on this day, more than the rest, your love and friendship must stand the test.

We have had so many happy years, you wouldn't want me to suffer so,
So when the time comes...just please just let me go.

Take me to where my needs they'll tend, only...stay with me until the end.
And hold me firm and speak to me, until my eyes no longer see.

I know in time you will agree, it is a kindness you do for me.
Although my tail its last has waved, from pain and suffering I have been saved.

Don't grieve that it must be you, who has decided this thing to do,
We've been so close...we two...these years, don't let your heart hold any tears.

I got to the gate of Heaven yesterday, after we said good bye,
I began to miss you terribly, because I heard you cry.

Suddenly there was an Angel, and she asked me to enter Heavens gate,
I asked her if I could stay outside and wait for someone who'd be late,

I wouldn't make much noise you see, I wouldn't bark or howl,
I'd only wait here patiently, and play with my tennis ball.

The Angel said I could stay right here, and wait for you to come,
Because Heaven just wouldn't be Heaven, If I went in alone.

So, I'll wait here, you take your time. I'll watch the flowers and bunting
Make sure you bring along your gun so we can do some hunting.

I love you Frank,

Buster
